Acer h6510bd review: 1080p on a budget

by Jane on February 24, 2016

A while back (2015) we wrote a reply to a question asked by a person curious about buying a native 1080p high definition resolution projector on a budget. At the time our answer was correct but now in 2016 we need to update that answer which is why we decided to write this review on the Acer H6510bd projector today.

Let us be more specific, the question asked in the spring of 2015 to inquire about recommendations on the best but lowest priced 1080p resolution home movie projectors. We provided a list of recommendations but also specifically said, “You will not be able to buy a 1080p high definition resolution projector for under $500“.

We did our research and at the time we were correct. However, now in 2016 we have noticed at least a few projectors have dropped below this price point. Sooner or later we will be putting together an entire list of models but for now we wanted to draw attention to the Acer H6510bd since it was the first model we this drop in price.

Acer H6510BD 3D Home Theater Projector review

Acer H6510BD 3D Home Theater Projector

Low price: But what about quality

Even though we would still recommend every model on our 2015 list over the Acer H6510BD this model does have certain strengths which could make it a good choice for people who are looking for a budget high definition choice for some people.

Overall, it has received good ratings and reviews from people w

What’s good – what could be better

This is not a portable projector, it’s somewhat larger and weighs about 5 pounds. It’s best for people who have a dedicated place/area in their home or office. It’s not a good choice for people who are looking for a model that can be easily taken with them on the go and set up in many different places often.

This models runs on DLP technology. Many projectors run on this technology and the major compliant is the “rainbow effect” that some people (a minority) seem to be sensitive to. Besides the possible sensitivity to the rainbow effect we believe DLP technology is superior in many ways, namely:

  • Deeper black levels
  • Faster response time
  • Bulb life seems to also be extended in DLP projectors compared to LCD

The lens provides a 1:1.3 manual zoom which is capable of producing a 100 – 120 inch screen image. From our at home testing a 100-inch screen image can be produced from about 9 feet away from the screen and a 120-inch image is produced from approximately 12 feet away. This for sure will exceed the size of the image produced by the TV you own.

The aspect ratio is native 16:9 but the image can also be projected in a 4:3 ratio if needed.

The contrast ratio is 10,000:1. If you don’t know, this means very dark colors will appear 10000 times darker than the lightest color. The ratio provided by this model isn’t the best but it’s better than average.

3D ready – If you are a person interested in the feature of 3D. Overall, with this model models performance in this are (considering the price range) as medium to good.

Acer h6510bd – best for the money in 2016?

We started off this review describing the impetus we had for writing it! That was about the lowest price for a 1080p home movie projector. In 2015, we said you could not buy only for under $500. However, now in 2016 we have notice prices have dropped on more than a few of this high resolution models.

The Acer h6510bd was the first 1080p that we noticed the price to drop under $500. We have many choices that we consider better overall but also think at this price this Acer model is a solid buy and provides much quality.

The one thing we would say, this is a larger and heavier projector (5 lbs.) this is not what we would consider a portable model. This is best for a person or business that has a dedicated space and don’t plan to move it from place to place.
