Best Camcorders under $200

As new models hit the market and as older models drop in price we will be updating this page so it includes all the current best camcorders under $200. On this page you will find handheld and waterproof action cams. However, since we only have hands on experience using about half of the models in this review we decided to include videos from people who actually own these models. These are the highest quality reviews videos we could find for each model.

For the most part, the camcorders we like the most are found higher up on the page. Note: As far as the under 200 dollar price goes. There probably will be models listed here just over this price range. We didn’t want to leave out a very good choice just because it might be $10 or $20 over.

This model is about as big as a can of soup and probably weighs less. I am always impressed with Sony’s image quality and even though the HDR-CX405 model is one of there more inexpensive models it doesn’t disappoint in the image quality department, delivering high definition quality (1080p) for both videos and pictures. The 30x Optical / 60x Clear zoom lens works great. Standing about 25 feet away from my computer monitor I was able to zoom in and read the text on a web page.

Definitely not a professional camera but holds great value relative to the price. See what this guy has to say about it in the video.

Samsung HMX-F80

This handheld is one of the more expensive models on our list. Since it only recorders at 720p resolution some people think the Samsung HMX-F80 is a little overpriced. However, the sharpness and colors are excellent compared to most, image quality is nice. Also, it does include a few features not found on many of the less expensive camcorders. Like a 52x optical zoom and a 130 digital zoom. The image display is 2.7 inches.

Learn what this guy has to say in his video review.

Polaroid XS100i Extreme Edition

This waterproof sports camcorder records in high definition 1080p resolution at 30 fps (frames per second) and at 60 fps at the lower 720p resolution. Like with any product positives and negatives do exist. The Polaroid XS100i is low priced, has wifi, auto-rotation (cool feature) and the mounts provided work excellent. Overall, easy-to-use.

Can’t change the battery, for some people this might be a negative. The battery charges through a USB port. If you anticipate using the camera for a lengthy period of time you will not be able to switch out the dead battery for a fully charged one. So if you are not near a power source you will be out of luck. On the other hand, the battery does have a long charge life. Twice as long as many of the camcorders on this page. Another negative, there’s no display to use if you need to set-up a shot but through it’s wireless connectivity it is able to connect to smartphones. You can use your smartphone screen as the display.

Below is a video comparing the Polariod XS100i to the more expensive GoPro 3.

Ricoh WG-M1 Black Waterproof Action Video Camera

A very well designed durable camera we are not saying you want to test it but its shock resistant and can withstand dropping it on cement. Its also cold resistant to temperatures 14 degrees F. We had the opportunity to test the Ricoh WG-M1 while snorkeling in the Caribbean the waterproof casing preformed excellent as we dove to levels of 30 feet.

For a price of under 200 dollars not only does it provide a rugged design but also some impressive features. It is wifi enabled. The wide angle lens is able to capture full HD 1080p video with a realistic sense of depth. The colors and contrast are above average and the video capture is smooth. We would rate the video quality of the Ricoh WG-M1 very close to the more expensive GoPro Hero 3.

Besteker HD 1080p Digital Video Camcorder

This will probably end up being one of the least expensive options on our list here. For the price it does provide decent value. The specifications say this is a high definition 1080p resolution model but in our opinion the video quality while it is decent but not exactly as good as the product description portrays.

With that said it does provide some decent features: HDMI and USB ports, 270 degree auto rotation, a 3-inch LCD display screen and fully charged the battery will last around 3 hours.

We would not recommend this to a professional but a decent little camcorder to have around the house or take on vacation with you.

Best Camcorders under $200

As we mentioned at the top of the page to bring you the best possible choices in this price range we will be periodically updating this page as new good choice in handheld and waterproof action cameras arise.

When trying to decide which model will work for you we recommend taking the time to read over different reviews. Read more than one review on the model you are interested in. You also need to be realistic. While you can get a good camcorder in this price range don’t expect anything out of this world.

If you can afford to spend a little extra then we have a suggestion. We have noticed companies such as Canon and Sony have some very good deals on discontinued models. How do you find these? One way is to visit Amazon and enter “camcorder” in the search box. Once the results are given, scroll down the page until you see the “PRICE” filter in the sidebar on the left. Enter a price range of $200 to $250 and some very nice discounted discontinued model from Sony and Canon will appear in the results.

With the Sony HDRCX405 Handycam mentioned here is there a 3.5 mm jack to plug in a microphone?

While the Sony HDRCX405 does record audio, however, there is no 3.5mm jack for recording audio by microphone.
