Portable Projectors for Laptops

by Jane on March 7, 2016

Finding the best portable projector for your laptop depends on a few factors. One of these is “intended use“, in many respects this is probably the most important factor to base your final buying decision on. Why? Think of a teacher or business professional needing a model for the purpose of making presentations then a person interested in the best portable model for movies or gaming. What’s the difference?

There are more than a few differences between projectors made for business or class room presentations vs. those better suited for home movies or gaming. One simple but important difference, models made for presentations are usually “brighter” but those made for home movies have better color display.

With that said about business (strength in brightness) Vs. home movie (strength in color display) while this is the norm, it is not inconceivable to find some of the better portable models being versatile enough to preform at high levels in both these areas.

One of these versatile models is the IncrediSonic PMJ-500 Pico projector. This was made for presentations and preforms exceptional in this area. There are many positives that can be said. However, this model also provides extremely good color clarity making it an option for movie watchers as well.

This IncrediSonic model has great connectivity (HDMI, VGA, Composite A/V, microSD, USB 2.0 reader). It weighs 1.5 pounds, the dimensions are 8 x 8 x 4 (inches). It’s not the absolute smallest model but definitely small enough to carry anywhere you want.

iCODIS CB-300 – home movies*, streaming*

This model fits in your hand and operates on Android OS 4.4 which makes it an excellent choice for a person wanting to stream content (NetFlix, Hulu, Sling, etc.). It also connects and works very well with PC, Chromebook, and iPad.

Another important consideration is connectivity. We are writing this review in 2016. We would be surprised to find any projector that could not connect to a laptop. Although if you are using a Mac this will probably require buying an adapter cable. What we mean by connectivity is a portable projector having the ability to connect through multiple different ports (VGA, HDMI, USB) greatly enhance it’s versatility.

Agree or not with the top 10 recommendations

While putting together our review and top recommendations in 2016 we came across this 2015 video titled “Top Ten Best Portable Projectors 2015“. The video does contain useful information but do their recommendations still stand 1-year a later?

Top 10 Portable Projectors for Laptops

Note: The following list is from the video above. We agree with a few of the models on the list like the AXXA P4-X but we would not rate this as the absolute best model you can buy for using with your laptop. We have darkened the models on the list that we agree with.

  1. AXXA P4-X Pico Projector
  2. Aketek Newest Uprgrade K10
  3. Asus S1 LED Projector
  4. Phillips Picopix 2055/F7
  5. AXXA Technologies Pocket LED
  6. Ivation Rechargable HDMI Projector
  7. HDMI Pocket Projector
  8. Dell M115HD
  9. ViewSonic PDJ 5533W
  10. Optoma ML550

As we said, the list provided above are not our recommendations instead, theses models come from the content provided in review video on this page. While all these models will connect and work with a laptop, we don’t not agree with the list as far as being “The Top 10“, in fact it seems the person or company that made the video review put very little research into their recommendations.

However, that is not to say we there are no models on that we would not recommend (darkened). Just to be absolutely clear the models we do provide value for the money are: AXXA P4-X Pico Projector, Asus S1 LED Projector, AXXA Technologies Pocket LED, Dell M115HD, ViewSonic PDJ 5533W and the Optoma ML550.

The bottom line

There are a ton of different choices in portable projectors for laptops. We didn’t come close to covering all these choices.  However, we do believe the models recommend on this page are quality hold value vs. price.

As we said at the beginning of this review the most important consideration to make in order to get the best model possible is knowing your “intended use”. Remember before buying any model there are some that are made for presentations while others are made for home movie viewing.
