ViewSonic PJD5134 SVGA DLP Business Projector Review

Made For Business and Classroom Presentations

Below you will find results of important features reviewed and tested before making our recommendation. Focused on what we consider the most important qualities and features: Resolution, contrast ratio, lumens, lamp life, portability and inputs/outputs.

The resolution is SVGA 800 x 600 which is far from true high definition.  But we mainly promote this projector as a good inexpensive choice for business and classroom presentations running off a laptop. This level of resolution is definitely more than adequate for this type of usage.

But we did test the resolution by comparing the quality to watching half the movie “The Dark Knight” on a 42″ HDTV, the Blu-Ray version, then watching the second half using the ViewSonic PJD5134 projector.

There definitely was a difference in the resolution quality but we were impressed with the sharpness this cheap ViewSonic model was able to produce as we watch the second half of the movie.

Contrast Ratio

Basically, how dark do darker colors appear and how bright do lighter colors appear. The ViewSonic PJD5124 projector possesses a contrast ratio of 15,000:1. This is more than an adequate level of contrast for presentations.

Comparing the contrast quality to watching a Blu-ray movie on 42″ HDTV there was a noticeable difference. But we were still impressed with what this model was capable of. After all, we are not recommending this as a home theater projector rather a inexpensive model for presentations. But we were more impressed than we thought  still impress with it ability to watch movies.

 Lamp Life

ViewSonic PJD5134 SVGA DLP Projector lamp lifeVery good news in this category. The lamp life on this model is rated for up to 10,000 hours. This is a lot of presentation. Saving you money on lamp replacements.

Not every business person or student requires a projector that’s portable. Many of the companies I have work for and with over the years have had the same projector, sitting on the same desk for years. They obviously don’t need portability.

But if you’re a person who does presentation at many different places, you might benefit by having a lighter and smaller model to carry around with you?

The ViewSonic PJD5134 SVGA DLP Projector is not only lightweight compared to most projectors but also has smaller dimensions making it good choice for someone who has a crowded desk.

Home Theater and Gaming

As we have said from the beginning, we recommend the ViewSonic PJD5134 as a good inexpensive model for use primary for presentations.

Although many people have used this model for both home theater and gaming and have left positive reviews on its performance, we will not personally recommend it for this type of use

Below you can see the main inputs and outputs and other features found on the ViewSonic PJD5134 projector. For such an inexpensive model a wide range of built in technology which you will be hard pressed to find on others in its price range.

In case you are not sure what all the technical terms and acronyms pointed out in the image below mean, you can find a brief summary below.

ViewSonic PJD5134 Projector Review

Since the majority of people already know what AC Power and a vent is we won’t waste your time summarizing everything.  Most of these outlets, such as the RS-232, audio, s-video/video in, are simply where you will be plugging cables in and making connections to another device (such as your laptop) allowing the projector to receive data for presentation image (PowerPoint and other software) and sound from your laptop.

You might be wondering what the Kensington Lock Slot is? This isn’t a fancy feature but might be something you need. This is an anti-theft device, allowing you to lock your projector down to a stationary object like the the table, wall or floor.

Are Lumens Important

Just as centimeters, millimeters and meters are units used to measure length. Lumens are the units used to measure light. The “International Systems of Units” defines the total amount of light emitted from a source (your projector) in units of lumen.

The ViewSonic PJD5134 SVGA DLP Projector is rated at 3000 lumen.

But what does all this technical talk about lumens mean when it comes to finding a good projector for business or classroom presentations?

When making a presentation you want to be able to project a bright image of all your beautiful graphs and tables onto the screen. But the room will have a certain amount of ambient light.

A room with a high degree of ambient light requires a more powerful lumen source to present a bright image compared to a room with a low amount of ambient light.

A completely dark room with the lights off and shades drawn requires less when compared to a room with the lights on and the sun shining in.

The good news is virtually all the projectors on the market today, rated 2500 lumen and higher will produce a bright enough image for the typical sized presentation screen or on a flat wall.

Lumens, Image Brightness and Screen Size

If you are wondering, does screen size effect image brightness? Yes. As you increase the size of your image this will require more lumen

The Best Presentation Projector on a budget

The ViewSonic PJD5134 SVGA DLP Projector, in our opinion you will have a hard time finding a better model to use strictly for presentations at this price.

Not to say there aren’t any other models to consider in its price range. There are a few and there’s also more than a few you should stay away from buying.

Not all of the following recommendations are made for presentations, here’s a few recommendations priced under $400:

optoma x303 vs ViewSonicThe Optoma X303, very similar in all features to the ViewSonic PJD5134. Very little, if any difference in performance for use in presentations. Said to perform better in the home theater and gaming.

acer k132

The Acer 132 LED Projector. This  inexpensive model is for people who want to buy something dedicated for movies and gaming.

projector presentation reviewWe have not personally use the FAVI RioHD-LED-3 Mini Projector ourselves but this model has received some decent reviews from many consumers. It looks cool and it’s very small and portable.
